KITCHENS:
From “Medieval” to Modern!
Although this home exudes the elegance and charm of a by-gone era, the tiny kitchen was ugly, outdated, and dysfunctional. Calfayan Construction had done extensive remodeling work on other rooms of this house and was asked to create a modern, beautiful, functional and energy-efficient kitchen for owners who love to cook and entertain.
Originally the servants’ kitchen, this room had not been updated since it was built in the early 1900’s. Cabinets and drawers were falling apart, appliances were long overdue for replacement, and those wire shelves had to give way for a well-organized pantry cupboard! The owner told Laura and Reis Calfayan, “My kitchen was originally designed for the servants – and that’s exactly what I feel like in it! It’s too small, medieval and awful!”
Calfayan converted three rooms and a hallway into one large room by eliminating partition walls and nine doorways. The new large foyer with exposed, original stone walls leads to a charming Colonial kitchen with abundant storage and fine custom details.
Highlights of the craftsmanship of this kitchen remodel include:
Custom-made honey pine cabinets up to the nine-foot ceiling
Hand-picked granite countertops
Random-width, tavern-grade pegged red oak flooring
Home-office nook
Built-in pantry
Extra-deep countertops
