COMMERCIAL EXTERIOR:
Open-Air Pavilion at Abington Art Center
Winner:
2001 Marvin Yellow Rose Award
2002 National Contractors of the Year (CotY) Commercial Exterior Award
Calfayan Construction was called in to build and manage the construction of the open-air pavilion at Abington Art Center after unforeseen problems arose with site excavation for the originally-planned building. Asked to reassess and address the issues and adhere to the original budget and construction timeline, Reis and Laura Calfayan took on the challenge. They were committed not only to the future of the Art Center but to the future of the young couple who had already booked their wedding reception at the pavilion that spring!
The collaborative efforts of the architect, contractors, art center administration and members built an enduring community partnership and a lovely event venue that has had a significantly positive financial impact on the Center’s future.
Using steel framing to accommodate the cathedral ceiling and hip roof, ¾” sheathing was installed to tighten the structure and strengthen it against wind and snow loads. Imitation slate shingle made of recycled plastic mimicked the look of the adjacent Art Center’s original roof in dimension and color. Replicating the historical architectural details of the Center’s main building, the entire fascia, soffit and columns were trimmed in cedar, using antique-reproduction shutters laid vertically.
Despite nasty winter weather that made building on terrain with a steep grade even more challenging and time-consuming, Calfayan Construction met their objective: the project was completed on time, on budget. And the newlyweds enjoyed a lovely reception in the new, open-air pavilion! |
